22+ Miles
Santa Cruz, CA to Pacific Grove, CA
In 1980 Cindy Cleveland was the first and to date the only known person to complete a solo crossing of Monterey Bay.
On August 20, 2009 our crew had some of the most amazing weather conditions one could ever hope to see on Monterey Bay. Even 12 miles out in 3000' of water conditions were like glass. Regretfully these perfect conditions meant the rare bloom of jellyfish were also right on the top of the water. After six and a half hours and roughly twelve miles I was pulled out.
What we have learned since the swim is that the jellyfish toxin has a cumulative effect in the body and impacts both heart rate and blood pressure. The bottom line for me was that for the first time I can remember I could not stay warm.
Although we were not able to get to Pacific Grove I consider the swim a success.
We do these swims because both Michelle and I feel a connection to and passion for the oceans around us. We want to share that passion, and create opportunities for others to find their own place beyond the beach. Through marathon swims we intend to bring attention to the waters in which we swim and the work we do to help others share in our experiences through the Ocean City Swim Club and our work with lifeguards, swimmers, triathletes and anyone who wants to discover what more might be waiting for them beyond the shore.
